 Kanstul Marching Brass
The year was 1961. My brother Ziggy joined the Boy Scouts. They
had a Drum & Bugle Corps, Troop 72 of Anaheim California.
They issued him a one-piston bugle. It was a SLINGERLAND. They
were a drum company at the time that also made bugles. My father,
Zig Kanstul was plant superintendent at the F.E. OLDS COMPANY.
He took one look at the bugle and knew we needed help. So he became
the Drum Instructor and Joe Lintz, a trumpet player and family
friend who also worked at OLDS became the Horn Instructor. My
father then started to work on some bugles for the corps. He did
this in his spare time. This was to launch him into what would
become a defining chapter in his illustrious career. Designing
the first KANSTUL BUGLES for the Drum Corps Community. In 1963
we broke away from the scouts and started the VELVET KNIGHTS.
My father continued to make bugles for the corps. In 1968 he designed
a line of bugles for the F.E. OLDS COMPANY. Always an innovator,
he convinced OLDS to make BELL FRONT instruments for the marching
band. This led to his designing the first MARCHING BRASS for OLDS
in 1969. It was an instant success. All the major manufacturers
copied the idea. In 1971 my father became Vice President of KING
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS in charge of the BENGE DIVISION. This led
to his designing the AMERICAN HERITAGE line of bugles. Finally
in 1981 KANSTUL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS was born. He immediately got
started on a CONCERT QUALITY line of bugles for the drum corps
community. It is these instruments that defined the SOUND OF DRUM
CORPS and helped the activity to achieve World Class recognition.
They were played by DCI championship corps from the 80’s
into and through the 90’s.
Now the band community can achieve THE SOUND THAT DEFINED DRUM
CORPS ... with the CONCERT QUALITY line of KANSTUL MARCHING BRASS
